New material for shipbuilding

With the outstanding performance in operating, PPC (Polypropylene Copolymer) material is widely used in shipbuilding industry in many countries around the world. By supplying patrol boat for Viet Nam Coast Guard, James Boat had officially introduced a new material and technology for the shipbuilding industry in Viet Nam.

Mr. Nguyen Kim Son – James Boat chairman said that the process of building PPC boat requires waterjet cutting and heat sealing technology, which were transferred from OFF- SEA Ltd (Czech). Not as simple as it sounds, James Boat expert had had spent considerable amount of time to learn about those technologies. Experts in the industry considered James Boat success in mastering those technologies as a turning point of the industry. They assumed that it had unlocked a new potential for Viet Nam shipbuilding industry. Before Viet Nam, PPC material was widely used in building ships and yachts in
Europe. It has many outstanding features such as anti-corrosion, harmless to environment and health, heat and frost resistant, soundproofing, thermal insulation, anti-fouling, high elasticity, low friction, acid resistant, light, long lifespan (25-40 years) and can be 100% recycled.
The Deputy of Science and Technology – Mr. Tran Van Tung commented: Since PPC was approved in many countries and proved to be much more better than traditional material, our authority should hurry set the standard for PPC in building ships and verify ships made from PPC. Having a 3200km coast line, our country has a huge demand for marine transportation for economic and national security purposes.

Many shipbuilders in Vietnam are having a desire to apply this technology but facing challenge in registering this material. Recently, Vietnamese Register has granted a certificate for trial building a yacht, five canoes and a dock from this material.

However, this is still a trial. Businesses in the field show great concern toward the date they can officially bring their products from this new technology to the market. The Deputy of Science and Technology informed that the authority was very grateful since James decided to build 2 patrol boats for the Coast Guard. The company paid all cost and the result of this project was sent to the Science Council and certified by Vietnamese Coast Guard Register. The boats were delivered to the Coast Guard to put in use. Nevertheless, to put PPC material in commercial use, businesses still have to wait until the authority set the standard for PPC.

PPC has to be certified by National Science Council, experts in the field of PPC to approve its use in shipbuilding. The Science Council decided to take a research in standards established by other countries. This can be a foundation for Vietnamese register to apply and certify ships made from PPC.
With its advantages in shipbuilding, PPC is very appropriate to replace the traditional material and should soon be available on Viet Nam market.
